Audience Member Etiquette for Millennials

Hi my name is Alex and I am a Millennial. Something I really hate to admit.

As a performer and a theatre goer and fellow millennial, I have seen the decline in the audience member. They have no clue as to how to behave at a show. And to be perfectly honest the "normal" theatre goer is dying out. I also blame social media and reality tv, and guess what I blame my fellow Millennials. Our attention spans suck.

I believe having art is necessary thing to have in ones life if you want to be a well-rounded individual. The theatre arts can change the world and change history. We can fight tyrants (trump) and we can spread love instead of hate.

On that note I present to you my top 10 etiquettes for my fellow theatre going Millennial.

  1. See theatre. It doesn't have to be broadway, hell it doesn't even have to be a bad community production of Oklahoma. Even seeing an open mic session at your local cafe will broaden your view of the world.
  2. Support diversity and inclusion. Our world is a huge melting pot of beautiful diverse individuals. Shouldn't our art reflect that?
  3. Protest the theatre arts that are not inclusive. The only way we are going to see a change in society and the arts is to fight for it. DON'T go throwing a flaming bag of shit at a theatre for crying out loud. DO tweet at the theatre company that isn't open to diversity. Tell them you want their shows to reflect the growing multiracial population! Talk about it with your friends, and I hope this goes without saying - don't buy a ticket to see said non-inclusive production.
  4. Stop texting on your phone while seeing a show. It's rude and annoying and this is one of the reasons why people hate millennials. The whole point of a theatre experience is to disconnect, to immerse oneself into a whole other world. Be present.
  5. Stop talking to your friend next to you during a show. Why bother even going to the theatre If you are gonna blab the entire time? Once again it's rude and annoying. Have some class.
  6. Most theatre's allow you to bring in an alcoholic beverage for the performance. Please don't get wasted during the show. There is nothing worse than a sloppy audience member having to be escorted out my an usher. This is not Vegas... unless you happen to be in Vegas seeing a show... then you do you boo, you do you.
  7. Hate the show? Don't bash it while you are still in the theatre, (especially if you are in the business) wait until you are a safe distance away. I have seen careers ruined by this. Walls have ears.
  8. Don't go to the theatre sick. Why? Why would you go to a show coughing like you have the consumption? Gross.
  9. Do not jump on the stage to see if there is an outlet where you can charge your phone.
  10. Please please please respect the theatre and its artists. Stay through the damn bows. Those actors worked hard and they deserve to be applauded. So please give them that much. There is something so disrespectful to me as watching audience members bolt for the door during bows.
  11. Pick up after yourself! Don't leave a mess behind.
  12. DO NOT put your feet up on the seat in front of you! This is a theatre! Think of it as a house of worship. Respect!

Now go out there and enjoy the theatre!

THEMIXEDSHOP.COM

OBSESSED WITH THEMIXEDSHOP.COM via Swirl Nation Blog

Nicholette Thomas of The Mixed Mama blog, has launched an online store, The Mixed Shop! The store brings natural/multiracial hair care products, diverse toys & books, and other specialty items all into one spot. When we asked her what inspired her to launch the store, Nicholette said,

"What originally inspired me to create this site is the frustrations that I would have trying to find dolls that looked like my kids and books that included characters that represented my family.
While being a part of a variety of groups for multiracial families, I also noticed a lot of parents asking what products they should use for their kids hair. Something clicked and I thought it would be a great idea to have a place where a parent could go to and not only get recommendations on hair products, but could also find toys, books, and other clothes & accessories specifically for their multiracial/multicultural families."

I love the selection of products on the site, such a great combination of useful everyday products along with awesome clothing and accessories. What a perfect place to shop for holidays gifts!

INTERRACIAL CHASE COMMERCIAL

INTERRACIAL CHASE COMMERCIAL via Swirl Nation Blog

I'm loving this new commercial by Chase that features an interracial couple from childhood on through adulthood. You see them walking to school together at various ages through the years, and then there is some distance between them in high school, before they eventually reunite and end up together, all while Pat Benatar's We Belong Together plays in the background.

I still get excited every time I see a multiracial couple or family represented in advertising. I feel like advertisers have become more conscious of this and are making more of an effort in the last year or so to make sure their casting choices better represent the world as a whole.

OBSESSED: RUMOR MILL, PRINCE HARRY AND MEGHAN MARKLE

So, I’m not entirely sure this story is true, but let’s pretend it is because it’s AMAZING! For the past few days several news outlets have been reporting that 32-year-old Prince Henry of Wales (better known as Prince Harry) is dating 35-year-old American actress of “Suits” fame, Meghan Markle. I don’t know what’s better, the fact that she’s three years his senior or she’s a gorgeous mixed woman! I honestly can’t remember that I’ve ever heard of someone in the British royal family being linked romantically to someone of mixed race (don’t quote me). While growing up queens and princess were always white, and the first black princess I can even remember (besides, Lisa McDowell in “Coming to America”) is Tiana in “The Princess in the Frog.” The problem here – both of those stories were fictional, and this story is real (well, maybe). Anyway, I love this rumor because I hope whether it’s true or not it gives little mixed girls hope that they someday can be princesses, too. Go Meghan, get you a prince!

THE.WAV

I am currently OBSESSED with The.Wav! And honestly I have been for the last few years. Watching the evolution of these magnetic artists has been amazing. The.Wav combines different rhythms, sounds, and cultures to create their own sound, which they describe as Afro-Trap.

The group itself is comprised of 4 members, Gregory Stutzer, Kelly Be, Cardigan Deville, and Badí. Each from a different cultural background, and their backgrounds are definitely reflected in their music and even in the title of their new album, Diaspora of Sound.

This album has something for everyone! From the Caribbean pop Carnivál vibes of their hit single “Love Games” to the hypnotic lush jungle rhythms of “Claim My Love”, you’re sure to find yourself winding your waist and drifting off with the music.

THE.WAV via Swirl Nation Blog

The.Wav will be hosting an album release party on November 3rd at Los Globos in Los Angeles. And just in case you needed any more reasons to love them, the party will feature all female DJ's and percussionist from different cultural backgrounds! Talk about representation!

There will be a special guest list for friends of Swirl Nation Blog.

To RSVP, please shoot an email to swirlnationblog@gmail.com

We hope to see you there as we get down to multi-cultural grooves and celebrate the diverse beauty of the diaspora!

THE ART OF KOHSHIN AND DELFIN FINLEY

Kohshin Finley

Kohshin Finley

I was lucky enough to meet brothers Kohshin and Delfin Finley last fall through my friend Elizabeth, who is best friends with Kohshin and Delfin's mother, Blanca. The moment I saw their work, I knew I had to meet them and I was lucky enough to collaborate with them on an art show very soon after!

Both brothers are clearly extraordinarily talented painters and all of their work is incredible, but my favorite pieces are the ones that dive into social issues, specifically tied to their experiences as young, multiracial men.

Delfin Finley

Delfin Finley

In Kohshin's piece Camouflage For The Modern Man you see a black man with white paint on his skin, representing a need to camouflage his blackness in order to stay safe in today's world. Similarly in Only Way To Make The News At 25 you see Kohshin actually as a self-portrait also covered in white paint for protection.

Delfin's piece Dead Man Walking shows a young man crumpled onto the pavement.

I think you will find their work as powerful as I do! I can't wait to see these two young talents take over the art world!

ABOUT KOHSHIN FINLEY

@kohshin_nn

@kohshin_nn

Kohshin Finley is a contemporary painter based in Los Angeles, CA. He received a BFA from Otis College of Art and Design. Kohshin utilizes traditional oil painting techniques and contemporary text-based imagery to communicate a character’s emotional travels; where they were; where they are; and where they will be.
Kohshin explains his work by saying, “Los Angeles’ graffiti covered walls and sign-lettered awnings are as artistically inspiring to me as the classic works of the Renaissance. Just as a songwriter tells stories through rhythm and melody, I tell my stories with brushes and paint. The subjects of my paintings are captured in a vulnerable state of being, at their most honest and revealing. Poems and short tales are written in diaristic scrawls throughout the paintings as if the characters wrote them. I utilize traditional oil painting techniques and contemporary text-based imagery to communicate a character’s emotional travels; where they were; where they are; and where they will be. I create paintings in this way to showcase my own vulnerabilities, and to give the viewer permission to discover something about themselves when viewing my paintings. I utilize traditional oil painting techniques and contemporary text-based imagery to communicate a character’s emotional travels; where they were; where they are; and where they will be.”

ABOUT DELFIN FINLEY

@delfinley

@delfinley

Delfin Finley grew up in South Central Los Angeles and always felt a great connection to the art that sprouted around him. Instead of letting his spirit sink with the chipped paint and broken windows of the abandoned buildings, he saw beauty in the vibrant colors and lines of the graffiti embellishing the alleys. He found even more inspiration in the people that found their voice through a spray can.
He was born with a need to journal his experiences through drawing and later through oil painting. He speaks through his images, which flow more easily than words. His portraits convey the emotion and angst of love lost, the pain of depression, racism and ultimately the joy and beauty of a moment forever captured on canvas.

AMIT SHIMONI'S 'HIPSTORY'

I love art. Like LOVE, LOVE, LOVE art. The walls of my apartment are overflowing with pieces from amazing artists, many of whom I discovered online or on Instagram. Recently I came across an artist's Instagram profile that instantly caught my attention!

Let me introduce you to the work of Isreali illustrator, Amit Shimoni.

AMIT SHIMONI'S 'HIPSTORY' via Swirl Nation Blog

His series HIPSTORY has reimagined world icons such as Barack Obama, Martin Luther King, Queen Elizabeth II, Che Guevera, and of course Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump into technicolor hipsters!

The pieces are amazing! Barack all tatted up, the Dalai Lama in a hoodie and a mohawk, Martin with the flat brim, and Hillary rocking purple ombre hair- each one has special details and I love the bold, colorful style.

On his Facebook page, Amit shares this philosophy about his work:

I am Shimoni, a young designer, illustrating is my love. I think anything can be turn into an illustration, seriously anything, whether it is scenery or a feeling; and I believe an illustration has a place anywhere, seriously anywhere, whether it is in the Louvre, or on coasters, if it is illustrated I love it.
I see my creation process as a game of "Ping-Pong" with the reality, I capture things that
arouse thoughts and feelings within myself, and through my filters, I bring it back to world as a drawing. I hope that after going through my filters, these final outcome will light something in you, or at least give you something to contemplate about, but not less important I hope you will find them beautiful.
Click here to check out his Instagram!

Click here to check out his Instagram!

Amit told the Huffington Post:

“When I started ‘HIPSTORY’ I only wanted to deal with the dead leaders,” he said. “But with today’s personification of politics, you see how leaders are being iconized already in the process of their election. And Trump is a good example of that.”

I can’t wait to see who hipster-izes next! I also need to figure out a way to clear some wall space so I can start my own HIPSTORY collection!

BABY JOEY NAPS

Yesterday at work I was aimlessly wandering the internet looking for inspiration when I came across the most adorable baby, doing the most adorable things. Now, I am a mom, but I am not one of those baby freaks. I think my baby (who is now 12 and 5'8") is adorable and the greatest human being I have ever met, but I do not melt in the presence of random babies. But baby Joey Choiz could change that!

The Huffington Post shared out this article about how baby Joey's mom dresses her up while she naps in pop culture inspired costumes. Not just a little prop here and there, but full-fledged amazing costumes. They are absolutely the cutest thing you will see all week! Follow mom Laura's Instagram account to see tons more!  Also as mentioned in the Huff Post article, the captions are on point too!

SWIRL KITCHEN: ROASTED RADISHES WITH BROWN BUTTER SAUCE

Prior to focusing on eating less carbs I don't think I really thought about radishes at all. I mean, if they were in a salad at a restaurant I would eat them, but I never bought them. But then I read that they are super low in carbs, so I decided to see what I could do with them.

Last week I think I created the holy grail of radish recipes and it is seriously SO EASY.

ROASTED RADISHES WITH BROWN BUTTER SAUCE

  • Preheat the oven to 450
  • Clean the radishes
  • Slice off the ends (you could use the tops, but I didn't because I had purchased my radishes at a Japanese grocery store that had already cut the ends off)
  • Slice the radishes in half and place in small bowl
  • Mix in Olive Oil and sprinkle some pink salt
  • Pour onto a cookie sheet and roast for about 15 minutes
    • If you want them a little crispy you may want to cook them a little longer
    • Stir 1/2 way through
  • Pull them out
  • Then melt some grass fed butter with another pinch of pink salt until it starts to slightly brown
  • Plate your radishes and pour butter sauce over top and then garnish with parsley

Beautiful! My daughter was skeptical when I told her what I was making (that is usually her first response to my experiments;) but she LOVED them! This will now be a regular side dish for us!

SWIRL KITCHEN: SHRIMP AND CHICKEN LETTUCE CUPS

Curried chicken

Curried chicken

If you are looking for the perfect summer dinner this is it! It is quick and doesn't require too much cooking.

CURRIED SHRIMP AND LETTUCE CUPS

For chicken:

  • Heat oven to 425
  • Cover two chicken breasts with curry spice (any organic curry mix is fine), salt and pepper. Then drizzle olive oil over top and place in oven for approximately 15 minutes.

For shrimp:

  • Heat skillet to medium and add 1tbsp of olive oil
  • Sprinkle with curry spice, salt and pepper on top of shrimp and place in skillet.
  • Cook a couple minutes on each side until shrimp look pink

Sauce mixture:

  • Get a bowl and mix 1/4c of mayo, 1/4c of Greek yogurt, and half a small dallop of something sweet. I used Walden Farms Calorie Free maple syrup because it doesn't have carbs. If you aren't Keto you can use honey. Mix together.
  • Then add 1/8c of golden raisins, 1 piece of celery chopped small, and a small bunch of purple grapes sliced in half. Set aside.

Assemble:

  • Add sauce mixture to lettuce cups
  • Place protein on top
  • Add cashews for crunch

And serve! Delicious!

SUMMER PLAYLIST PICKS: GIRL POWER MIX

Summer time is the perfect time for GIRL POWER! Right now I am obsessed with three “I got the juice/Best you ever had” songs.

First up, Rihanna! Rihanna has been known for her in your face attitude, but this song seals the deal for me. “Needed Me” is an unapologetic “Boy bye! Don’t get it twisted.” to the guy who just can’t seem to understand you simply do NOT need him.

Needed Me – Rihanna

Next up, Ms. Lopez comes through with in your face girl power, chanting “I aint your mama” and a list of things she AIN’T gonna be doin’ this summer.

“Ain’t your mama” – J. Lo.

Finally, we have Fergie! It’s been a while since we’ve heard from Fergie Ferg, but she’s back and celebrating her success as both a mother and an independent boss in her new song. Plus the video features some cameos from some pretty bad celebrity mamma-jammas including Kim K and Chrissy Teigen.

SUMMER PLAYLIST PICKS: SUN BLEACHED

SUMMER PLAYLIST PICKS: SUN BLEACHED via Swirl Nation Blog

I don’t get to wear a swim suit very often, so mine usually hangs out at the bottom of a drawer waiting for summer and the day I get to hop on a plane to a tropical location. So when I finally dug it out of the depths for my trip to the Big Island, I was surprised at how sun bleached it was. Then when I landed in Kona, I pulled out my yellow iPod Nano (circa 2011), plugged it into the car… And realized just how sun bleached my playlists were looking, too. A little faded, a little worn from one too many listens, not to mention, I think the newest album on my trusty litt player might be the Arctic Monkeys’ AM. It might be time to get some new tunes, but for now, I don’t mind sticking to the songs that served as my soundtracks for summers past. Though I might be in the market for a new swim suit. Without further ado, here’s my Sun Bleached Summer Playlist:

  1. Blister in the Sun - Violent Femmes
  2. Pass This On - The Knife
  3. Sunset - The xx
  4. Lysergic Bliss - Of Montreal
  5. Into the Sun - Sean Lennon
  6. Sunday Girl - Blondie
  7. Play with Fire - Rolling Stones
  8. Oslo in the Summertime - Of Montreal
  9. Summer’s Thirst - Pretty Lights
  10. It Is Not Meant To Be - Tame Impala
  11. Golden Brown - The Stranglers
  12. Holy Roller - Thao & The Get Down Stay Down
  13. Sunny Afternoon - The Kinks
  14. Losing You - Solange
  15. Vacation - The Go-Go’s

SUMMER PLAYLIST PICKS: YUNA

I have become somewhat Obsessed with Malaysian singer Yuna. Her voice is addicting and her style is fierce too. I’ve been listening to her old album a lot lately, the self-titled Yuna came out in 2012. Lullabies is my favorite song, it totally transports me. There isn’t a video for Lullabies, not sure why, but take a listen:

The tone of her voice and this particular song also totally remind me of this other singer I used to LOVE, her name was Hope and I would listen to her song Who Am I To Say about 100 times a day.

Ok back to Yuna... her new album is titled Chapters and came out this year. She has a song called Crush with Usher that I also love. Her voice is like silk. I also love the interracial love story that plays out in this video between a young asian boy and black girl.

I also love that Yuna is one of the rare pop stars that has a more modest style which makes her stand out and she wears a headscarf or hijab at all times. You can see that on display on her Instagram page.

SWIRL KITCHEN: ROASTED CAULIFLOWER WITH PROSCIUTTO AND ALMONDS

Cauliflower is one of those vegetables I fell in love with later in life. When I was a kid I wouldn't touch it, but then again I had only come across bland, steamed cauliflower. Rich, nutty roasted cauliflower is where it's at!

KETOGENIC ROASTED CAULIFLOWER WITH PROSCIUTTO AND ALMONDS RECIPE

  • Heat oven to 450
  • Toss chopped cauliflower in olive oil with ground sea salt and pepper
  • Pour onto tin foil lined pan
  • Roast in oven for 10 minutes
  • Take out and add the chopped almonds and prosciutto ripped into smaller pieces to the pan
  • Roast for another 10 minutes or until cauliflower is browned on the edges

Tip: Be careful not to add too much olive oil or the cauliflower won't get as crispy! I've definitely gotten carried away before:)

SWIRL KITCHEN: AVOCADO DIP & PARSNIP CHIPS

YOU HAVE TO MAKE THIS!

SWIRL KITCHEN: AVOCADO DIP & PARSNIP CHIPS via Swirl Nation Blog

Trader Joe's Parsnip Chips are delicious and super low carb! They have a sweetness to them, which made me want to pair them with a creamy dip, which led me to throw together this Avocado dip. It turned out much better than I expected!

HOW TO MAKE IT:

  • Place 2 avocados and 2 heaping spoonfuls of sour cream in the food processor and blend them up.
  • Then add pepper, pink salt, and Tajin and blend more.
  • Add the juice of 1/2 a lime and blend more.
  • Finally some chopped fresh cilantro and blend a bit more.

Then add a little more cilantro for presentation and pair with the parsnip chip. YUM!

I had far more dip than chips, so I ate the rest with a spoon. It is THAT GOOD! 😋

SWIRL KITCHEN: LOW CARB BRUNCH

I only make breakfast on the weekends because there is just no time during the week as a working, single mom. So when I do make it, I like to make something special! One Sunday morning I made cream cheese pancakes with whipped cream on top, bacon and scrambled eggs. My daughter did a happy dance when she saw the plate:) Here are the details:

PALEO BACON

I saw this Paleo Bacon at Whole Foods and despite the high price ($9.99) I decided to buy it and give it a try. It has no added sugar or nitrates and humanely raised pigs. I baked it at 425 for about 20 minutes until crispy because there is nothing I hate more than floppy bacon!

The bacon tasted great! Would I be able to tell the difference in a blind taste test?! No. But I always try to buy the best possible ingredients and respect what I put in my body so I will definitely buy it again.

This bacon only has a few ingredients: pork, sea salt, and spices (black pepper, fenugreek, nutmeg, white pepper, mace and allspice) and is free of allergens. A lot of people don't realize that most bacon is cured in sugar, which is why this bacon is ideal for my low carb lifestyle.

SCRAMBLED EGGS

I need to get cute skillets to match my pots!

I love scrambled eggs, I make them a few different ways but this is my favorite right now. This is enough for 2 people and I usually have a little left over which I will reheat into a breakfast on the go or something. Some people seem to be super weirded out by reheated scrambled eggs, but I'm not!

  • 6 cage-free brown eggs from Whole Foods
  • Pink Himalayan Salt and pepper
  • 2 TBSP of organic HWC
  • TBSP or so of parsley

I whisked it all together, put a big tab of Kerrygold grass fed butter (I always use salted) in the skillet and then poured in the egg mixture. I cook them over medium and stir the eggs quite a bit. Then when the eggs are almost done I mix in a little more dairy goodness:)

  • 2 big spoonfuls of sour cream
  • 1/2 a cup or so of shredded cheese

Then I turn the heat to low and mix them up and let the eggs a little longer. I prefer doing it this way versus adding the cheese and sour cream earlier in the cooking process. Then I add a little more Pink salt and pepper at the end and garnish with a little more parsley. One thing I learned from a year or so of Blue Apron is that Garnish makes everything look professional:)

CREAM CHEESE PANCAKES

Cream cheese pancakes seem to be a staple in the Keto world! This is only the 2nd time I have made them, but one thing I learned from my first attempt is to make the cream cheese pancakes smaller than you would typically make a normal pancake. It makes them much easier to flip. I based my recipe off of this one I found Googling and you can find it on myKeto Pinterest PageI halved the recipe since there are only 2 of us and it made 6 small pancakes.

I used a food processor, you could use a blender if you have a good one but I do not. My mini food processor was the first size for the 1/2 batch.

Mix it all together until smooth. Heat skillet on medium, add a TBSP of butter into the pan and pour pancakes that are about 1/3 of a cup. Cook until top is bubbled and looks well cooked and then flip. The second side barely takes any time at all to cook. That's it!

Then I topped them with whipped cream instead of syrup!

AND HERE ARE THE RESULTS!
